Honu – Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle

In Hawai’i, many people have a family `amakua. This is the animal your family or clan associates with. This is similar to the concept of a totem in Native American culture. The Honu is the `amakua for the Mark Carson family in Hawai’i.

The honu represents longevity, wisdom, safety, and mana (spiritual energy) in Hawaiian culture and their presence brings good luck and peace.

The Honu, or Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas), is a familiar sight in Hawaiian waters. While you might think of turtles and tortoises being awkward on land, green sea turtles “fly” along underwater and are graceful creatures who use their front flippers like wings. They are named for the green color of the fat under their shell (not the color of their shell).

The Mark Carson watches honu logo is based on Hawaiian petroglyphs (stone carvings) which are found on the Big Island of Hawai’i.

We chose to represent our `amakua using the outline of a honu with a central line as commonly depicted in Hawaiian petroglyphs. Our trademark honu is shown on a blue background representing moana (the sea).
